Closed-Minded People
With technology and society growing as it is, I think that we are hitting a time period where people are more apt to stay inside rather than go out and do something. This can be applied to world problems and people contributing towards them. I know a lot of people get involved with rebuilding homes or serving food to the homeless, but the majority of people just send money or turn their head the other way. This can be seen by commercials and the signs that homeless people have on the streets. Commercials rarely ask for help; instead they just ask for a donation. Homeless people do not ask for help, they ask for money. In both cases, they know that people will be more likely to give money than their time. I can say I am guilty of this because I have donated money to different causes instead of volunteering my time. I think that when people start shifting back towards helping out their community and different causes, then we will see a huge positive change in the world.

This is an interesting question to grapple with. I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I know that I want it to be something that helps people in a significant way. And in order to get ready for that thing (whatever it is) I know I need to work as hard as I can at school. Because I have chosen to do this and a few other activities which I deem necessary for my personal sanity (singing, etc.) I feel that I don't have time to volunteer, and instead donate money to causes I deem worthy. So essentially I'm telling myself: "Preparing for the great amount of good that you will do in the future is more important than doing a small amount of good right now." And I have a feeling that a lot of people justify donating money rather than getting involved this way, rationalizing that the good they do at their jobs is greater than the good they might do volunteering. But sometimes I wonder if this is true. What do you think, David?
