The Apartment, was a great movie and I can see how it was so succesful. It is really a great movie for Ethics class because, if we like it or not, this is what happens in the real world. Not every company is unethical, nor is every CEO or executive. However, I think more often than we think, people are given promotions and/or raises because of what they may be able to do for somebody as opposed to hard work or sheer technical skills. In the case of C.C. Baxter, it was a mixture of both. He was indeed a hard worker, but more importantly he was willing to give up access of his apartment. In my opinion, what Baxter did was not unethical. At no point did he leverage the use of his apartment for a raise/promotion. With that being said he was being used and he should have stopped it before it started.
