I can agree with Milton Friedman on some of his beliefs but one I can’t agree with is legalizing marijuana and other drugs.  I know that is a huge topic in the United States right now and everyone has their own opinion on legalizing drugs.  I believe once people smoke pot for a while they become more and more immune to effect that it has on them, just like alcohol, they build up a tolerance to it and therefor they want more and more or move on to stronger drugs.  Friedman says that the prisons population would be cut in half but is it okay that all those drug addicts would be out and endangering innocent lives?   I know firsthand the devastation that drugs can have on a person’s life and their family.  If it weren’t for jail a lot of people would be dead or stealing to support their habits.  I think America is very fortunate to have forced jail time or forced rehab.

  1. The pros for legalizing such drugs greatly outweigh the cons. First the tax on drugs could help greatly with the federal deficit. And the price of drugs would go down eliminating the need to steal for their habits. And people would just have to take a taxi when they are impaired just like drinking. If legalized people wouldn't go to jail for a minute crime, there would be more law enforcement dedicated to finding murderers etc..

  2. I agree with you Kaylin. I feel that those who choose to use drugs, illegal or not, are choosing to disable their good judgement, which endangers those around them.

  3. I would tend to agree with this as well. Friedman says that it is not the governments business what people put in there mouth and he calls such actions "victimless" crimes. However, if we allow more people to function under the influence of drugs and alcohol in our society there will be victims. As Megan says, whether the drugs are illegal or not they still impair their judgement, which endangers others. Therefore these crimes are not "victimless" after all.

  4. Exactly, and maybe the cost of drugs would go down but the cost of drugs are already pretty cheap. When my brother first started on drugs he had a job and had money to support his habit but as time went on he needed something more to get a better "fix". Therefor it lead to stealing from the family and even robbed a place.. so is that okay? I would also like to bring up that my brother and his girlfriend had a kid about two years ago, and both of them were very bad addicts. About a month after their son was born they got in trouble and both went back to jail. So, if it wasn't for my family where would have RJ gone? There are so many children that are born addicts due to their selfish parents and don't get a fair start at life. There are so many other things that you have to take into account before you just go about legalizing drugs. I feel like legalizing drugs would be taking the easy way out...
